The Answer to True Healing

The Answer to True Healing

It’s the season of rebirth and celebration. If you observe Easter, I hope you had a joyous day.

I remember when Easter holidays were exhausting for me.
Even though they were enjoyable for a while, for a long time I didn’t understand why I was so tired.

Easter was one of the holidays we hosted. We had a large yard and the kids (and adults) could get good exercise hunting for Easter eggs and then chasing each other to break them. Although for the first few years we hosted, the kids were too little, and it was mostly the adults chasing each other.

The event usually required several weeks of worrying. . .
would everything go as planned.
How much food would we need,
what time should we begin,
would the weather cooperate,
how many hours would house cleaning take.

As the years passed, I fretted more and more
And got less and less enjoyment.

The less enjoyment I experienced, the more guilt I felt
at not enjoying the event.

The more guilt I felt, the more painful the event became
and the more stress and unease I experienced for weeks leading to the day.

It wasn’t until years later that I understood
why the holiday had turned sour for me.

As wives and mothers, our culture expects us to put the needs of the family first. If we don’t, we are made to feel lacking and unfit.

Oftentimes, women don’t start taking care of themselves until they are seriously ill. Many cultures, including our own, exalt the self-sacrificing mother.

Most women take on those beliefs, of putting others first, without knowing they are. They are so normal that it takes tremendous courage to even be able to interrogate the belief.

One spiritual principle that asks us to rethink the belief is this:

My  one true responsibility is to the development of my soul.

If we start focusing on ourselves, does that mean we will become selfish and solely intent on meeting our own needs?

When I first asked myself this question, I was both fascinated AND horrified by it.

Was I capable of becoming so selfish that I would abandon the needs of my children?

I have to admit that there was a part of me that fantasized about being able to focus only on myself. But the fantasy of release quickly deteriorated to a vision of life riddled with guilt and depression.

This dual way of thinking, of all or nothing, is also something our culture encourages.

It keeps us from seeing a different way in which BOTH the needs of our children and our own needs can be met. Neither needs to be sacrificed.

I wanted to care for myself but not at the expense of the well-being of my children. Doing both honors my soul in different ways.

***

By the time I heard the spiritual principle above, I was already working with clients to help them understand the energy their soul was here to express.

I learned that if a person does not live from and honor their soul energy, they start feeling a sense of unease that slowly becomes heavier and more painful.

For parents, the pain comes because of a fundamental misunderstanding. It is NOT our soul purpose to be parents.

We CAN express our soul energy through parenthood or any other endeavor. Ultimately, our responsibility is to express the divine within us.

Expressing ourselves authentically means remaining faithful to our own soul in anything we do.

Which means we have to give ourselves permission to take the information life gives us, such as feeling bad, as a sign that we are deviating from our true soul expression.

When we are expressing our unique soul energy, we feel happy and excited about the future.

Being able to take “feeling bad” only as informationwithout judging it, is transformative on its own. Feeling bad is NOT a sign that we are deficient or unfit.

Instead, the feeling is pointing us in another direction for the answer.

***

Based on my understanding of my own soul energy, I now know there was nothing wrong with my lack of enthusiasm for the holiday.

Now that I understand my own energy, I know that the large family gatherings were not honoring my unique soul energy.

First, I feel more fulfilled by smaller intimate celebrations and my soul thrives with having a variety of experiences.

Neither of these facets of my self were being honored by having the same, large family event every year.

***

Expressing our unique soul energy and meeting our own needs is a good lesson for our children to learn. They must be able to honor their true desires.

The sooner we are able to, we can start looking at negative feelings as clues that we must follow. They help us to express our own needs and make moves to meet them.

The sooner our children, especially our daughters, learn this spiritual principle–
of taking full responsibility for their own soul expression–
is not just acceptable but necessary for their own well-being and that of the family,
the sooner they can start learning how to notice their negative feelings as information guiding them towards their authentic soul expression.

We can model this pattern for them.

***
I want you to consider.

Maybe that exhaustion you’ve been feeling is because some of your needs are not being met.

This may include your physical need for rest and relaxation.

But also consider this…
your healing will require that soul-level energy that is yearning to be expressed.

Earth Hour

Will you be switching off your electronics in honor of Earth Hour tomorrow night?

What fun things to do during that hour?

It’s been very dry in south Texas so I’m going to spend some time fertilizing and watering my fruit trees which are full of new growth.

I keep hoping that some of my father’s green thumb qualities pass on to me now that he’s passed, but that energy is taking its time to feel fully embodied. I can feel it taking shape though. I notice the trees and their growth. I can almost feel them calling out for water when it’s been too dry. I can catch the whiff of their leaves as I pass by.

Most recently I could smell the fig tree when I went to water it. It’s almost like the plants are aware of my presence as well. At least I like to think so. A few days ago I rejoiced out loud when I saw the Peace Lilly my colleagues gave me after my dad passed had its first lily that has grown since it was gifted to me and I almost let it die from lack of water and light.

Thankfully, it is going strong and it’s celebrating spring with its first lily. #soulslegacy #ancestralblessing #soulactualized #ancestralhealing #ancestros #earthday #gratitude #plantspirits

The link between thoughts and anxiety

Prolonged feelings of anxiety impact us negatively both in body and spirit.

Anxiety keeps our bodies in a constant state of low-level fear which produces cortisol in our bodies. It limits the possibilities we are aware of and what we are able to envision for ourselves.

In the article How to lessen the impact of anxiety, I shared two strategies you can implement to help you begin to control the impact that anxiety has on your life.

In addition to gaining a body awareness which includes both feelings in the body and actions we take on a daily basis, we want to pay attention to our thoughts.

What we think about others and the world around us, the beliefs we hold about ourselves, and the stories we tell ourselves to help us understand the world around us greatly affect the amount and frequency of anxiety that we feel in our lives.

We know that what we think directly relates to what we feel and to the actions we take. Focusing on our thoughts can be the second layer of awareness that begins to shift our levels of anxiety.

More than likely, your thoughts greatly affected the feeling and sensations that you translate as anxiety. Once you can notice what anxiety feels like in your body, you can begin tracking what exactly caused those feelings.

Our thoughts directly impact our emotions so tracking what we are thinking and which thoughts lead us down a spiral and create anxious feelings is a life-enhancing skill.

Once you can notice which thoughts lead you down the spiral, then you can begin making changes in your thought patterns.

One skill you learn in the Mastering Your Energy Body class is determining the origin of the thought patterns. You can consciously make changes to your thought patterns, however, our thoughts are so automatic that it takes great effort to make the changes with our will alone.

When we engage the energy body to inform what changes we need to make, we find the shift in thought patterns is much easier to maintain.

3 Unconventional Ways to Communicate with Divine Spirit

One of the lowest points in my life was when I felt utterly alone and whatever I tried didn’t help.

This loneliness and sadness was eventually compounded by a rage that I felt vibrating inside my body. This feeling was so strong that I felt as if those sensations were going to explode through my skin.

I had no idea what was going on and I had no way of understanding what I was feeling or why. Even worse, I had no framework from which to talk about it.

I remember this part of my life when clients share with me that they feel alone and disconnected.

I know that feeling all too well.

So, I understand when they say they feel disconnected with themselves, with their loved ones, with their spirit, with their bodies.

Seeking to heal this feeling before my behaviors became more self-destructive is what started me on my spiritual and healing journey.

I have learned that this disconnection gets translated into our physical experience as low energy, constant worry and many times develops into full-blown depression or anxiety.

Other times this disconnection leads to addictive behavior, like overeating or nail-biting, hair pulling, or more serious behaviors.

The truth is we are never truly disconnected even when we feel we are. But this feeling is so strong that we believe it is real.

I want to share 3 ways that helped me and can help you start to shift this feeling of being disconnected.

Even though these seem simple, each of these is a way to communicate with spirit and to begin to consciously create that feeling of being connected.

TALK IT OUT

The first tip I want to share with you is to start communicating with your sense of the Divine Spirit even when it feels like there is no one listening.

The world is brimming with life around you. Start talking to something that cannot talk back. You can choose a plant or can choose a pet to talk to. Or put on your headset and imagine you are talking to a friend. I started by getting a dog.

The important detail is to see that plant, pet, or friend as a representation of spirit. When you are talking to them, you are talking to spirit.

They won’t necessarily talk back but be open to the way that Spirit will start communicating with you. It may be through messages and synchronicities out in the world.

BREATHE

The second way I recommend is to do breathwork. Countless studies show that slowing down our breathing, being intentional about lengthening the breath in and out helps to relax our bodies.

To me, though, breathwork can be used to communicate with the Divine.

Imagine that the air you are breathing is spirit energy because it is. Spirit is in everything.

Breath intentionally through your nose, a long deep breath into your belly and exhale through your mouth. On the next breath, imagine you ARE breathing in Spirit and it is filling your body.

Then follow the breath as you feel Spirit and Divine Love filling and flowing through all the cells of your body.

You can do this for as long as you want but doing it, even for 30 seconds to start, will bring you results.

GROUND WITH THE EARTH

Finally, the third way is to learn how to ground. When we ground to the earth and start moving the earth energies consciously into our body, it is transformational.

Even if you don’t feel anything right away, continue doing it, even if for only one minute a day.

Imagine, or just think about if you find it hard to visualize, the different layers connecting you to the earth like a chain link.

From your skin, then your clothes or shoes, then the chair, then the floor, then the foundation, then the ground, then the ground with roots, then the bedrock, etc. all the way to the center of the earth. Then bring your imagination back up the chain links.

I love grounding and breathwork because they can be done anywhere.

I can be sitting at my desk at work or waiting for my coffee to finish brewing, or in bed getting ready to sleep. And these two practices don’t require that I be alone or have a lot of time.

***

Even though you may be thinking that breathwork and grounding are not communication methods, I want to argue that they are the MOST fundamental of communication methods.

What is communication but an opportunity to connect with someone — to connect with them and give them an opportunity to connect with us.

The truth is we are ALWAYS connected to Spirit and the Divine.

These simple practices help us have a form of communication that we can process through our bodies, via breath and visualization. By processing these physically and mentally, we can start to shift what we are thinking and how we are feeling because our feelings COME THROUGH our bodies.

I encourage you to try these out and I would love to hear about your experiences with them.
